Chronic Venous Disease refers to conditions related to or caused by veins in the legs that become diseased or abnormal. This can include the following common conditions: Chronic Venous Insufficiency, Varicose Veins, Spider Veins, Painful Swollen Veins, and Venous Ulcers.

Common Vein Conditions

Chronic Venous Insufficiency

Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a form of venous disease that occurs when veins in your legs are damaged. As a result, these veins can’t manage blood flow as well as they should, and it’s harder for blood in your legs to return to your heart. CVI causes blood to pool in your leg veins, leading to high pressure in those veins.

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins appear twisted and bulging, they can be swollen and raised above the surface of the skin and do not control blood flow as they should. Varicose veins may also cause aching pain, throbbing, and discomfort. You should see a doctor about varicose veins if:

  • The veins have become swollen, red, or very tender or warm to the touch
  • There are sores or a rash on the leg or near the ankle
  • The skin on the ankle and calf becomes thick and changes color
  • A varicose vein begins to bleed

Spider Veins

Spider veins often resembling spider webs or thin tree branches, spider veins are small, dilated blood vessels near the skin’s surface. They can be red, purple, or blue in color, usually appearing on the legs, chest, or face, and are a sign of underlying venous reflux, just like varicose veins.

While mainly a cosmetic issue, spider veins can be irritating, causing itching, burning, or cramping.

The causes of spider veins are similar to that of varicose veins. Causes include genetics, aging, hormonal changes including pregnancy, standing or sitting too long, weight gain, as well as exposure to the sun without sunscreen.

Venous Ulcers

Venous Ulcers are sores on the leg that are very slow to heal, usually due to poor blood circulation. They can lead to more serious problems if they are not treated.

What's the Process?

  1. The patient will be referred to the vein clinic and/or will self-refer. (Referrals are not needed unless required by your insurance carrier.)
  2. Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center will set up an initial consult and obtain an ultrasound for baseline imaging.
  3. The patient will meet with the provider to go through symptoms and ultrasound results, and discuss potential recommended procedures.
  4. The procedure will be scheduled and performed. (Most insurances will require a waiting period prior to approving the procedure. This will all be explained during the initial consult.)
